It is the first station in Singapore that serves both an elevated line (East West Line) and an underground line (Circle Line). The livery of the East West Line and the Circle Line portions are green and orange respectively.

It is just south of the urban planning areas in Singapore and the town it serves, Paya Lebar. The station also serves the Geylang Serai district, the popular Geylang Serai hawker centre, and the Malay Village. Therefore, it usually gets crowded during the Hari Raya period, when Muslims and other visitors flock to the festival bazaar.

The station is located in the Serangoon Central area, at the intersection of Upper Serangoon Road and Serangoon Central. This station sees relatively heavy usage during peak periods, because a number of bus services which used to go to the city area now terminate at Serangoon Bus Interchange instead.

The Circle Line portion of the station opened on 28 May 2009.[1] This is the second station in the MRT system after Dhoby Ghaut to have a travelator within the paid-area of the station. An integrated development, consisting of the nex shopping mall and a Serangoon Bus Interchange, is built on the site directly above the Circle Line part of this station.

The Serangoon Planning Area, an urban planning zone under the Urban Redevelopment Authority, encompasses the entire Serangoon New Town and the private estates at Serangoon Gardens. It lies between Ang Mo Kio and Hougang.
